PROGRAM INFO

These Are The Breaks: Winter Intensive 2019-2020 is a week – long visual + performing  + digital arts retreat for young creatives (ages 13 – 22). It brings together a supportive communityspace and resources for young artists to train with professional artists, collaborate with peers AND explore Miami’s PEOPLE + PLACES + THINGS. Centered around a theme of FOOD + WATER + SHELTER, this experience explores opportunities and challenges facing Miami now and in the futureSpend Winter Break with other young artists who share an interest in:

+ Music production
+ Rap /Songwriting /Recording
+ Bboy /Bgirl /Hip Hop Dance
+ Urban Art /Graffiti Art and
+ Digital Storytelling

This experience is free of charge, but all applicants will be reviewed for selection.

* Meals and transportation are not provided or subsidized. Snacks are provided daily.

This Miami-centered creative retreat gives young artists: 

PEOPLE
+ training with professional working artists 
+ a community of talented peers to share the experience
SPACES
+ a dope space to find inspiration 
+ time away from their usual environment to create/develop new work
THINGS
+ equipment, supplies and materials to expand their craft
+ opportunities to perform/exhibit their work publicly through private and public performances throughout 2020.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Seth "Brimstone" Schere

Co-founder and Artistic Director of PATH: Preserving, Archiving & Teaching Hiphop, Inc. 25+ years in ALL Hip Hop elements. Former DJ for Piano Slam. Founder of Sober Studios.

BBOY / BGIRL INSTRUCTOR

Bboy Lego

One of Miami’s premier Bboys sought internationally as a performer, judge and instructor. He is part of the breakin crew FLIPSIDE KINGS and the theater company D-Projects.

MC / RAP Instructor

Mecca aka Grimo

International Hip Hop artist, activist and actor. His music fuses lyrical skill with socially conscious content. He is Program Director of Haiti Was Born In Me, LLC and founder of Poetic Lakay.

MUSIC PRODUCTION / Poppin' & lockin'

NONMS

Percussionist for the Billboard topping band, ¡MAYDAY! NONMS is a Miami native with diverse experience in  music production. He is a member of the internationally recognized Bboy crew, Flipside Kings, spcializing in poppin & lockin.

 

URBAN / GRAFFITI ART

MECS

Respected member of graffiti crew, AIM (Artsit In Motion). His is known for his explosive lettering style, fill ins, characters, bubble letters and tags. He is an architect and professor of architecture and an entrepreneur.

vocals/songwriting

Yoli Mayor

One of Miami’s most loved and internationally recognized multi-genre vocalists, Yoli Mayor, is a powerhouse with lyrical strength and vocal mystery. As a finalist on America’s Got Talent, she wowed audiences and inspired young artists around the world. 

Digitial storytelling

George Mercado

George is founder of Observe I Capture I Destroy, a South Florida-based documentary photography company that specializes in run-and-gun documentary, editorial and portraiture work from a fresh perspective. He’s been creating compelling multimedia content for over 25 years.

 

This project is made possible with the support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners and Miami Light Project. The project is funded in part by The Children’s Trust. The Children’s Trust is a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County.
