In the summer of 2020, hip hop education not-for-profits Solidarity Studios, Class Act Detroit, and Preserving, Archiving, & Teaching Hip Hop, Inc. used Citizen DJ to make beats with sounds from Library of Congress archives. In the spirit of the re-mix, the American Folklife Center and LC Labs commissioned DJ Kid Koala to compose a DJ set from these beats representing artists of all ages around the U.S. This video from the National Book Festival premiere features DJ Kid Koala performing his “Innercity Mixtape” on vinyl, along with a hosted discussion by Citizen DJ creator Brian Foo and collaborating educators and artists about hip hop, re-mix, knowledge and history. All the music you hear in the performance was made by creators using Citizen DJ, a music exploration and creation tool created by Innovator in Residence Brian Foo in partnership with Library of Congress Labs.
